Designed by Royal Copenhagen in 1775 as its first pattern, the "Blue Fluted Plain" dinnerware is one of the most famous porcelain decors in the world. The motif of the stylized chrysanthemums originates from China. The porcelain painters at Royal Copenhagen have refined it into the delicate and lively cobalt blue floral decor we know today.

"Blue Fluted Plain" is formed according to old tradition in complex steps, fired, glazed and painted by hand. The porcelain goes through 30 hands until it is ready. The porcelain painters at Royal Copenhagen alone need 1,000 brushstrokes and more to complete a plate from the "Blue Fluted Plain" line.
The origin of the name is attributed to the specific shape of the porcelain: Its ribbed outer edge and smooth centre is reminiscent of a shell. The original Danish name "Musselmalet" means "shell painted".

"Blue Fluted Plain" is also known as the no. 1 pattern and inspired all the following Royal Copenhagen lines: "Blue Fluted Half Lace", "Blue Fluted Full Lace" and "Blue Fluted Mega" - all variations of the famous Blue Fluted/Musselmalet decor. The cobalt blue colour of Royal Copenhagen connects all porcelain lines. So you can individually combine individual parts of the varied service.
