The Art of Weaving – At the Origin of the French Textile Industry
A region with tradition. Gérardmer is a picturesque town in the mountains of East France. Known as the "Pearl of the Vosges", it has been attracting hikers in summer and skiers in winter since the 19th century. Away from the hiking trails and ski slopes, the lakeside spa town is also known for its ancient crafts and considered to be the cradle of the French textile industry.
Benjamin Baer also moved to Gérardmer in 1861 to trade in locally produced fabrics. After his death in 1888, his partner Nathan Lévy and his brother Elie took over the business. They expanded their trading business into the "Nathan Lévy weaving mill" and started to produce fabrics from cotton, linen and half-linen. In keeping with the traditions of the region, they produced white linen exclusively. It was almost a hundred years before colour came into play.
With top technology to the colour revolution. After the growing manufactory was equipped with 65 ultra-modern Jacquard looms in 1968, the brand "Le Jacquard Français" launched in 1974 and began its collaboration with Primrose Bordier in 1978. The famous designer broke with all the conventions of the home textiles world and immersed the dignified white linen in imaginative patterns and vibrant colours. Le Jacquard Français became a trendsetter and coloured table and bed linen became a new creative style in interior design.
