"Haute Couture" by Nymphenburg

The "Haute Couture" tea service from Nymphenburg is a porcelain service that is impressively understated. An eye-catching feature is the distinctive seam-like line that encircles each piece of the elegantly shaped dinnerware. Munich designer Konstantin Grcic has turned what would otherwise be regarded as a flaw into an original design element.

That is because the narrow seam was developed on an idea inspired by the so-called demoulding seams in porcelain manufacture. When porcelain is cast from a liquefied paste, thin seams form on the joins of the mould. These are normally removed by the Nymphenburg porcelain artists. In the case of "Haute Couture" however, this feature adds an allusive touch to what is otherwise a deliberately sober and functional tea service design.
