"Clara" rhinoceros, white by Nymphenburg

This classic porcelain ornament – the rhinoceros "Clara" – from Nymphenburg whisks us back to the time when exotic animals were very popular in Europe. The original design for this rhinoceros was conceived by the court sculptor Peter Anton Verschaffelt back in 1770. His model for "Clara" was one of the first live examples of a rhinoceros to be put on show at the annual fairs and the royal courts of European monarchs.

The fascination for these thick-skinned creatures is reflected in the true-to-life design, which exercises the same fascination on people today. Nymphenburg uses bisque porcelain for the rhinoceros. The work is done completely by hand and based on the original design, thus highlighting the fine details on the body of rhinoceros "Clara".
