The rectangular "Malmaison" butter dish from Christofle is not only elegant, it is also very practical. The design comprises a crystal glass plate, a silverplated tray with an attractive palmette border of tiny palm tips, and an arched silverplated lid.

Since the glass plate can be removed from the tray, it is possible to place the glass dish into the fridge separately – without having to manoeuvre a space for the entire silver casing.
Providing the crowning touch is a sceptre-like lotus leaf, which serves as an elegantly shaped handle. The lotus is a typical design feature from the French Empire Style at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Christofle’s "Malmaison" line purposely emulates this line.

Literally translated, "Malmaison" means "bad house" and was the name of the country residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and his first wife Joséphine. However, the history books do not specify whether the imperial couple actually owned a similarly magnificent butter dish.
