Alessi is an Italian design brand for homeware products. Of the many other design brands, Alessi is the one most commonly seen at different permanent exhibitions.
Alessi, the dream factory
Alessi is regarded as a dream factory: it is where the ideas of some of the most creative minds in the world are transformed into products. The company has been established on a very firm base. Giovanni Alessi founded the company in Omega, Piemont in 1921. From a small metal goods manufacturer, Alessi developed into an internationally renowned design factory - yet has remained a family business. Since 1970, Alberto Alessi has been head of the company (third generation). In 1979, he invited the Italian design wizard Alessandro Mendini to join the team. The creative genius has been the design advisor of the company ever since, and directs its artistic course. Alberto Alessi gave his company the nickname "the dream factory". It expresses his belief that: "artists are like feathers floating in the air: you have to let them fly freely. Create turmoil and it is all over."
Icon is Alessis’s second name
This is how Alessi has regularly managed to create innovations and design icons: in 1983, Richard Sapper created the "singing" kettle "9091” – a design icon per se. In 1992, Philippe Starck created the world-famous "Juicy Salif" lemon squeezer for the Italian dream factory. Even if one can argue about how practical the squeezer is, it is a prizewinning creation and marks a milestone in modern design. Just recently, Alessis’s porcelain dinner service "Tonale", designed by the British architect and designer David Chipperfield, received numerous awards.
Alessi a driving force in the design industry
In 2006, the brand was divided into three sub-brands: Alessi, Officina di Alessi and A di Alessi. Alessi continues to focus on serial production for the home. The brand has over 2000 kitchenware products. And each one of them fulfils Alberto Alessis's requirement - which is to be "an object with a soul". It is thus no surprise that the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich dedicated an exhibition to the brand in 2010: "Alessi, objects & projects", which Alessandro Mendini curated himself. The list of designers who conjure up new creations for Alessi gets longer and longer each year: Philippe Starck, Jean Nouvel, Patricia Urquiola, Marc Newson – and new names are regularly added. The creative minds of this world never stop dreaming.
The DNA of Officina di Alessi contains the dream factory gene
In 2006, Officina di Alessi was founded as the sub-brand of the Italian design company Alessi – because what it is doing is not something that can be done as a sideline. The company is remodelling famous design classics, in order to bring out lavish new individual pieces. Selected products such as the designs of large Bauhaus artists are being manufactured again under the Officina di Alessi name – either as individual pieces or as a limited series. Design milestones can thus be enjoyed anew.
